A Facebook user Muhammad Shoaib Ahmad shared a video in which a few policemen can be seen shooting down some protestors. The message with the video reads, "Look at the dead bodies. 30 unarmed Kashmiris were killed today. The nation is still silent. straight firing...... May Allah destroy India and its slated army......" (roughly translated from Urdu).
The post was also shared by the Islamic Republic of Pakistan on Facebook.
A Twitter user @sweposten shared the video with a message "Have a look #India Police Barbarism and Brutally on unarmed civilians in #Kashmir". You can watch the video here:
In the video, we can see a crowd shouting some slogans and few policemen in kneeling position pointing guns towards them. A lot more people can be seen standing by the sides calmly and with their hands in hands.
After some time, the police starts firing on the crowd and two men are killed in a matter of few seconds. As soon as they are killed, people with stretchers are seen running towards them instantly. The crowd starts running in the opposite direction and police, after a few seconds, march in the same direction. An ambulance too can be seen following the police.
We had debunked this video last year when Rajiv Tyagi had shared the same video with a false claim that Mandsaur police had fired at farmers. The video is available on Youtube in which an announcement is made around 45th second that this was just a demo by Khunti Police to demonstrate that they are ready to handle any adverse situation.
Another longer duration video from another angle is available on Youtube with a headline "Jharkhand police KHUNTI (part of training) REHEARSAL". At around 1:30 minutes in the video, an announcement is made that this is just a drill by Khunti Police.
This announcement itself reveals all the truth and proves the video is from Khunti, Jharkhand and has no relation with Kashmir.
Also, while police are seen firing at the crowd, everyone else standing by sides are so calm but what actually happens in such situations is chaos and running of people all around which can not be seen in the video.
The claim that 30 Kashmiris protestors were shot dead by police is false. The viral video is a mock drill by Khunti Police.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police have brushed aside media reports of firing incidents in the Kashmir Valley, saying they did not fire a single bullet for nearly a week and the situation in the region is calm.
Inspector General (IG) of Police, Kashmir, SP Pani has also rejected media reports, saying they are false and no firing incident has taken place in the Valley in last one week.
However, it is important to mention that Siddharth Varadarajan has reported in The Wire that at least 21 young men and boys were brought in to Srinagar’s main hospital for treatment for pellet injuries in the first three days after the Modi government announced the scrapping of special constitutional provisions for Jammu and Kashmir, and the end of its status as a state. However, we couldn't independently verify the authenticity of the report.
